2017 Calera Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard

Aged 17 months in 30% new French oak,

Decanted to aerate for an hour or so. Obviously young, but shows potential for greatness. Could easily benefit from another 15 years of age. The dark color belies the elegance of this wine.

Really delicious Mt. Harlan limestone-grown cherry fruit, balanced acidity, subtle power in the filigreed tannins. Easily mistaken for a 1er Cru from Morey-Saint-Denis in a blind tasting (?). Delicious with pit cooked pork shoulder and pork ribs.

Winemaker Mike Waller decided not to pick when the heat came over Labor Day in 2017. “I know if you pick underripe, you can’t make a good wine. So you just have to go with it when that heat happens. It was 105 degrees here at Mount Harlan for a couple of days, but we hadn’t started picking. Some vines along the Central Coast stalled or shut down. But our vines kept maturing the fruit. I didn’t see anything shift or raisin. It wasn’t that frying heat that the rest of California had.”

2010 Delarche Corton Renards GC Vielles Vignes

2010 Delarche Corton Renards GC Vielles Vignes

I really don't drink that many burg GC's so this was a treat!

Slow oxed for 6 hours. Paired with pit-cooked pork shoulder and pork ribs, collards, coleslaw, hushpuppies.

Give It a lot of air and it's definitely worth cracking one now if you have several...

Super elegant structure and dee-licious cherry fruit. Two thumbs up 👍🍷👍🍷

This wine has a long classic life ahead of it...

Jurançon

Beautiful with duck confit hash (using sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, root veggies, peppers and a bit of balsamic)...

I don't drink enough Manseng...this is not a shy white wine at 14% abv.  Really fruit forward but decent balance. Slight heat on the finish should work itself out. Give it air and don't drink too cold...

Draws to mind a fresh juicy Valencia orange up front with a finish of lemons from Sorrento... yes, I realize neither of those regions are in France, but that's what I get on the palate..

2020 Famille Vaillant Grandes Vignes Le Malabe Sec

"....Chenin Blanc from the Vaillant's parcel in Bonnezeaux. With the 2020 vintage being particularly powerful here, they took a patient approach with the wine, aging for 1 year in large barrels with some new (though a very light toast) and then an additional year in porcelain and gres (sandstone)....."

Excellent showing with nice acidity and classic chenin blanc palate. Delicious with chargrilled branzino.
