1976 Rioja Gran Reserva, 2004 Brunello Riserva, 2010 Barolo

Three wines paired with made-from-scratch pizzas.

The 1976 Bodegas Corral Rioja Gran Reserva is a library release. It was beautiful and the WOTN. Such a joy to drink a perfectly aged 47 year old wine.

The 2010 Mirafiore Lazzarito was quite tasty. Soft structure for a 2010, with appealing fruit. It paired the best of the three wines with the pizza.

My exploration of Il Poggione BdM Vigna Paganelli continues. This 2004 was more relatable than a 2006 that we had recently. Lovely fruit nose when uncorked. I let it breathe in a decanter for an hour. Appealing structure with finely chiseled tannins and tasty fruit. But I swear it seemed to close up slightly as the evening went on. Perhaps because it was drunk next to two other wines that were showing so much.

Pizzas:

Marinara base with sausage, kalamata olives, Swiss Chard and topped with sliced buffalo Mozzarella

Olive oil and Asiago cheese base with caramelized onions, prosciutto, sprinkled with Gorgonzola Piccante and topped with four  sunny-side up eggs. The sharpness of the Asiago and the earthiness of the Gorgonzola Piccante blended together with the runny egg yolks to provide an irresistible flavor palate.
